In the north-east of Mauritius is Rodrigues, a small volcanic island having its local telecommunications services currently provided by satellite connectivity, and PCCW Global has come to agreement with Mauritius Telecom to construct and maintain the high speed submarine cable that will be connecting the Island to Mauritius – a vast improvement in connectivity for Rodrigues. The submarine cable, which will stretch up to 700km, has a design capacity of 16Tbit/s and Huawei Marine will provide the end to end solution and will deploy the system with a ready for service date in 2019. Once it is commissioned, the system will cater for increased bandwidth demand of island’s residents and its business enterprises over the next generation.
